Elizabeth Hermani

Elizabeth is 11 years old and is in class 6 at Njoro Primary School. She lives with her mother, grandmother, aunt, and one younger sister. Elizabeth’s mother is her main caregiver and provides the main source of income for the family by selling vegetables in the market. When Elizabeth was very young, her father passed away. Elizabeth aspires to be a teacher when she grows up.

 

Frank Spirian

Frank is 9 years old and is in class 4 at Njoro Primary School. He lives with his mother, father and some of his siblings. Frank has one sister who is in Secondary school, and two brothers, one who is in primary school and one who is in secondary school. Frank’s mother is his primary caregiver and his father provides the main financial support for the family, however his father has become very unreliable and has stopped paying for school fees and school supplies. When Frank grows up, he wants to be a farmer and work the land.

 

Fredrick Priscus

Fredrick is 11 years old and is in class 4 at Njoro Primary School. A few years ago, Fredrick’s father left his mother with the children and has not returned. Fredrick is currently living with his mother, his younger brother and sister, his aunt and her four children. His main caregiver, his mother, works to provide for Fredrick by selling vegetables on the street in town. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, Fredrick simply replied that he wants to be a good father.

Prosper Stanley

Prosper is 14 years old and is in class 6 at Njoro Primary School. Ever since he was a baby, Prosper has been raised by a woman known only as Bibi (grandmother in Swahili). Bibi took Prosper in when his father passed away and his mother left. Although Bibi has no biological relation to Prosper, she has loved and cared for him and 6 other children who live in the house. Bibi has no formal form of income, but does what she can in order to provide for the children. Prosper aspires to be a teacher when he grows up.

Richard Pascal

Richard is 11 years old and is in class 6 at Njoro Primary School. After Richard’s mother passed away, his father moved away to work as a miner. Richard lives with his grandmother, his uncle and his two cousins. His grandmother and uncle provide for Richard’s daily needs, and his father sends as much money as he can to help pay for school supplies and uniforms. Richard is studying hard in school so that he can become a doctor.

Sabrina Rashid

Sabrina is 9 years old and is in class 4 at Njoro Primary School. Her father lives in Arusha selling fish, and Sabrina is not sure where her mother is. Sabrina is living with her grandmother, who is her main caregiver and provides for the family by selling vegetables. Sabrina has two sisters and one brother, who is also in the same school as Sabrina. When she grows up, Sabrina wants to be a teacher.

 

 

Vaileth John

Vaileth is 12 years old and is in class 7 of Njoro Primary School. She lives with her mother and one of her brothers. Vaileth’s mom does not have a steady job, but performs odd jobs in order to be able to provide for Vaileth and her brother. Her mother has not been able to afford to pay school fees in quite some time. Vaileth aspires to be a teacher when she grows up.

 

 

Witness Bonifas

Witness is 12 years old and is in class 6 of Njoro Primary School. When Witness’ parents divorced, her mother left the family and left Witness and her sister to be raised by their father. Witness’ father  does not have a stable form of income and suffers from alcoholism. He performs odd jobs when he can in order to provide the basic needs for his daughters. Witness is studying hard in school and dreams of becoming a doctor.
